Begin before the forecast

The day before a storm is too late for major pruning. Routine observation and periodic professional assessment give you time to address dead branches, weak young structure, and target changes under calm conditions.

Use a baseline photograph of important trees from several sides. After severe weather, change is easier to spot when you can compare lean, canopy density, unions, and soil around the root flare.

Protect the root zone

Roots can be damaged by trenching, fill soil, parked equipment, repeated foot traffic, and changes in drainage. A green canopy may persist after root loss, so construction history belongs in any later risk review.

Before a project, establish a real protection zone rather than wrapping the trunk with boards. Keep excavation, materials, and vehicle loads away from retained roots as the project plan allows.

Use pruning precisely

Purdue Extension explains that pruning can improve structure and remove damaged branches, but indiscriminate cutting is not preparation. Topping creates large wounds and weakly attached regrowth.

For mature trees, ask for the pruning objective and approximate extent before work. Deadwood removal, end-weight reduction on a specific limb, and clearance pruning are different scopes.

After the storm passes

Stay clear of hanging limbs, split trunks, lifted root plates, and all utility lines. From a safe distance, note fresh changes and restrict access below them.

Purdue’s storm guidance emphasizes that damage may be hidden and recommends qualified professional assessment where advanced hazards are present. Not every damaged tree needs removal, but every loaded or unstable work zone deserves respect.
